Registered massage therapy is a great way to relax, relieve pain, and improve health. Here’s how to prepare and what to expect during your first massage.
Booking Your Massage
When booking your massage, consider the type of massage you want. Therapeutic massage is ideal for muscle tension and injuries, while Swedish massage is best for relaxation.
Health History
You'll receive an online health history form to complete. This helps the therapist understand previous injuries, health conditions, and allergies to tailor the treatment to your specific concerns.
Arrival and Initial Consultation
Upon arrival, the therapist will review your health history form and may ask additional questions. They might perform some orthopedic tests to better understand your areas of discomfort. After agreeing on a treatment plan, the therapist will leave the room for you to undress to your comfort level and slip between the sheets.
During the Massage
The massage table is adjustable for your comfort. Don’t hesitate to ask the therapist to adjust the headrest or feet cushion. Various techniques may be used during the massage. Communicate if the pressure is too light or too deep, if certain areas should be avoided, or if you feel any discomfort. Only the area being treated will be undraped.
Post-Massage
After the massage, the therapist will leave the room to allow you to dress. You might receive aftercare instructions, such as home hydrotherapy, stretches, or strengthening activities. Drink plenty of fluids to help eliminate toxins moved during the massage.
Helpful Tips
Communication: Let your therapist know if the pressure is too much or too little, or if you’re uncomfortable. Adjustments can be made to accommodate your needs.
Relaxation: Focus on relaxing and breathing. Don’t worry about body hair; it’s normal. Close your eyes and enjoy a peaceful state during the massage.
We hope this helps demystify the process and encourages you to book your first massage today!
